Position Title: VESSEL CAPTAIN
Category: Full time, temporary
Payroll Classification: Seaday Exempt ; Shipyard, hourly, non-exempt
Organizational Unit: Alaskan Challenger Operations
Location: M/V Alaskan Challenger, PWS ports or hatchery sites
Work Hours: Seadays (variable, seven days per week); Shore-based 8:00 AM -5:00 PM, Monday - Friday
Supervisor's Title: Production Manager
Basic Function: The Vessel Captain functions collaboratively with the Production Manager in the efficient transport of freight and personnel to and from the hatchery sites and ports located in Prince William Sound.
Primary Responsibilities: The primary responsibilities of the position are to work closely with the Production Manager for vessel scheduling and operation, maintain the freight vessel in ready status, administration of vessel operations and supervise vessel crew members.
Essential Functions: Work performed on the PWSAC vessel while at sea, in port, shipyard or hatchery location as duties require. Must be able to move about freely; work outdoors in all weather conditions; ability to lift and carry 50 pounds; ability to climb stairs and ladders; work around water - on docks, floats, on deck; ability to climb aboard and about vessels and small aircraft; dexterity to maneuver through tight spaces and good balance on uneven, wet surfaces and in rough water; use radios, compasses, electronic navigational equipment, telephones and computers unimpaired. Must be able to read, write, speak and understand the English language. Must be able to hear and see to receive verbal and written instructions.
Description of duties and tasks:
Delivery Services
Will coordinate with the Production Manager for the scheduling of vessel services, determining the vessel's course for efficiency, hatchery priorities and safety
Work with the hatchery personnel to determine optimum delivery times when tide cycles affect the delivery process
Oversee and participate in the loading, stowing, and unloading of cargo or passengers
Will drive jockey trucks around yards and on and off the vessel during the loading and unloading of cargo
Vessel Maintenance
Will maintain the vessel and its equipment to comply with the Coast Guard's certificate of inspection requirements and participate in Coast Guard inspections as scheduled
In coordination with Production Manager will develop and maintain a preventative maintenance schedule for the vessel and delivery vehicles
Accurately records and logs all boat maintenance and improvements
Verifies that machinery and equipment are in good working order and perform as needed routine or preventative maintenance
Oversees repairs ensuring completion in a timely manner to maintain the ready status
Caretaking duties of the vessel and delivery vehicles include, but are not limited to: inspection of the vessel and vehicles, performing or assigning preventative maintenance duties, ensuring all areas of the vessel are maintained in a clean and orderly fashion, and snow removal
Administrative
Works closely with the Production Manager in supply planning and ordering, maintaining an inventory and equipment for the preventative maintenance schedule or improvements
Tracks and records all expenses; tracking the purchasing activities to assure spending is within budget
Develops and maintains effective logs and records tracking the vessel's movement, cargo on board, passengers on board, and efforts in controlling pollution
Logs preventative maintenance performed on the vessel and delivery vehicles, prepares activity reports for the corporate office
Completes rough drafts of annual reports and operations plans
Enforces company policy by acting as a liaison between the administration offices and vessel staff
Supervises Crew
While on rotation will take command of the operation of the vessel and ensures that proper procedures and safety practices are followed
supervises the work of all crew for operations including steering the vessel, operating and maintaining engines, offloading cargo, handling lines, maintenance, caretaking duties, upkeep of the vessel, and communication with other vessels
