This position works on a grant or research project and performs specific analytical laboratory procedures, usually limited in number and repetitive. The position performs data recording and preliminary analysis and may prepare graphs and charts for publication. Work at this level represents a basic level of scientific contribution involving some theoretical knowledge. The Research Technicians perform preliminary analysis of data and may produce graphs and charts for publication, rather than final analysis of data and drafting portions of publications.This position requires a high school diploma or equivalent and three years of laboratory or research experience. Performs laboratory tests on biological materials using methods such as mammalian tissue culture, electrophoresis of protein and nucleotide samples, bacterial transformation and growth, sequencing, andmodification of nucleic acids. Performs literature searches for appropriate laboratorytechniques. Adapts protocols and procedures to perform laboratory analyses. Uses instruments appropriate to the research that may require extensive training and both theoretical and practical knowledge to interpret results. Helps with general lab maintenance and receives laboratory supplies, calibrates lab equipment, and helps with general lab tasks including buffer making, pipet tip filling, dishwashing, and autoclaving. Maintains logs and records of laboratory techniques, observations, findings, and results. Maintains project databases. Performs analysis of data using statistical software.
